2011′s Best Action/Adventure

This category has always seemed pretty broad to me. Is there action in the game? Great, put it on the list! Did I have a memorable adventure in this world? Sign that game up! Skyward Sword takes you on a true odyssey through the skies, and the new slick combat system makes this an action game deserving of a mention. Bastion, while on a smaller scale than the other titles on this list, has crisp combat and an appealing quest just waiting to be experienced. It’s a fantastic adventure, and also more than welcomed to sit at this table with the big boys. Yet, in 2011, it didn’t take me long to decide what game deserved the top spot. Which title manages to blend unbelievable action sequences with an authentic and heart-pounding adventure? A game that feels like it deserves to be in a movie theater, yet at the same time, transcends anything Indiana Jones or Han Solo could even begin to brag about? This award was specifically made for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and it deserves every piece of praise it gets. You could try to argue that it’s nothing more than an interactive movie. You could really try. At this point, though, I think we can move on from that comparison. After all the success Nathan Drake has seen, I think that any movie with high-octane action sequences and a suave protagonist are trying to be an Uncharted. So, The Adventures of Tin Tin, good luck balancing giant plane crashes with clever puzzle solving. If you ever think that it’s impossible, just give Naughty Dog a call.
