Bastion – I think it goes without saying that we are lucky to live in a world where video game entertainment can be accessed on demand whenever. Whether it’s spending all of your money on the current Steam Sale, perusing the iTunes App Store for games, or scanning Xbox Live Arcade for that new game everyone is talking about; today, you can find, download, and play games anywhere instantly. This year, the Best Original Downloadable game category contains both new and old IPs. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 falls into the latter category and offers much of the same side-scrolling action-slinging and shooting as its predecessor with new weapons packed in your arsenal, creating a sure-fire (no pun intended…okay maybe a little) fun experience. Frozen Synapse, like many games in this genre, was rather unknown to me, but after hearing about it from the those that played and enjoyed it at Reaction Time, I wanted to know more. Frozen Synapse delivers a gameplay experience unlike any I have seen when it comes to turn-based strategy games and a great soundtrack to boot! Alas, neither of these games were a match for Bastion, a much-loved game from Supergiant Games who’s reactive narrator, intriguing art-style, narrative driven gameplay, and amazing soundtrack put itself at the top of our list this year.
