2011′s Best Role-Playing Game

Bethesda have been doing open world RPGs for many years now, with the majority of them being in this very series, but they have always been far from perfect. With The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, I have to be honest and say that I was pleasantly surprised. With my love for Morrowind being somewhat squelched thanks to the next in the series, Oblivion, my hopes for Skyrim weren’t too high. They have now indefinitely mastered the formula in every way possible, with the exception of the elephant in the room which, of course, is the typical open-world bugginess that you get with these open Bethesda games. You can be anyone, do anything, and it really is your own adventure. The best RPGs around let you really do the role-playing, and Skyrim is no exception. This game is surely a landmark upon which future games of this nature shall be judged, and I’m really not sure if it can be bested in the near future. Maybe it’ll be when the next Elder Scrolls game rolls around. Oh, and the game looks pretty darn nice, too.
Honorable Mention: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Pokemon Black still should’ve won.
