2K Sports Reaffirms Perfect Game Challenge with New Twist
After two years of forking over million-dollar checks to the first player to pitch a virtual perfect game each season, 2K Sports is switching up the rules of the game.
If you’re not privy to the challenge, in the past, 2K Sports has offered a prize of $1 million for the first gamer to prove that, while abiding to contest rules and standards, they have pitched a perfect game in MLB 2K10 and 11. A “perfect game” in baseball, refers to a game where the pitcher pitches all nine innings without giving up any hits or walks – essentially sending twenty-seven batters back to the bench through horse-hide-slinging excellence. The challenge was instated in 2010, when 2K Sports redesigned their games to make pitching more realistic, and thus harder.
This year, instead of giving the money to the first player to complete the challenge, 2K Sports is hosting an eight-person tournament. Those who are able to beat the built-in “Perfect Game Challenge” mode on Xbox 360 or PS3 will be given a code to enter online. Once they’ve registered, players will be able to repeat the mode again and again to work their way up in the leaderboard. By the end of April, the eight finalists will be selected and placed into a tournament bracket to play live games for the million-dollar prize.
Though MLB 2K12 drops on March 6, the challenge doesn’t start until the opening day of Major League Baseball, April 4, giving everyone a chance to throw some warm-up pitches.
