Be Wary of Fake Halo 4 Betas, Microsoft Warns

Though it’s set to be released during the next holiday season, Halo fans can’t help but get excited for the next installment of the franchise, Halo 4. Microsoft, though, is warning against a certain degree of overeagerness that has some users signing up to receive beta codes for a beta that hasn’t yet been announced, let alone released.

After receiving reports of websites offering free beta codes for Halo 4, David Ellis of 343 Industries (a division of Microsoft) has announced, via his Twitter feed the following:

“If you see a page claiming to allow you to sign up for a Halo 4 beta be advised, IT’S A FAKE.”

The tweet also has an attached link to a three-second YouTube video wherein Senator Vreenak from Star Trek declares the same message of, “It’s a fake.”

It’s easy to see why fans might have mistakenly signed up for a beta code. First of all, betas are always enticing, as almost everyone wants to be in on the action as early as possible. Secondly, a simple Google search for Halo 4 beta brings up a first-hit of “halo4beta.net” which looks an awful lot like an official site, offering beta codes through Facebook sharing. However, to reiterate the point Ellis and Microsoft are making, don’t be fooled. Any and all beta offers right now are unofficial and fake.

Halo4Beta.net homepage. Looks pretty legit, right?

Microsoft has yet to reveal whether or not they will even be hosting a beta or demo of the upcoming title, so, for now, let’s make Nancy Reagan proud and “Just Say No” to Halo 4 betas. It does seem likely, though, that we’ll be hearing something about an official beta, as both Halo 3 and Halo: Reach had limited multiplayer betas for those with exclusive code vouchers from other game purchases.
